About
Mazing By Josh
Hi, I'm Joshua Humphries, a Canadian artist, and I've been drawing mazes for over 20 years.
At first glance my artwork looks like a burst of bold colour and wild, abstract lines. Look a little closer and you'll find a maze hidden inside, with a start, a finish and every twist and turn in between. I draw every piece by hand, and each one has its own level of challenge.
An ancient art
The more I explore the "why" behind my art, the more possibilities open up. People have been making mazes for thousands of years: the Egyptians, the Greeks, the Celts and many more. Young Roman nobles rode horses through maze-like patterns to train for battle. Scandinavian fishermen walked stone labyrinths by the sea, hoping for a good catch and a safe return. Kings and queens in Britain and France planted maze gardens to explore and to entertain. High in the Andes of Peru, at the ancient temple of Chavín de Huántar, liquids offered in ceremonies flowed through maze-like stone channels, and many believe the way they flowed was read as a sign of the life ahead. The Pima and Tohono O'odham peoples of Arizona see life itself as a maze, with all its twists and turns, ending with Elder Brother, who leads you to the next life. When I draw, I feel connected to all of that.
Mazes you can walk up to
My mazes started as interactive art exhibits. I enlarged them into big prints, encased in plexiglass or laminated, so people could stand in front of them and solve them together. They've been in schools and youth centres and in front of older folks too. The best part has always been watching people of all ages lean in, trace a path with their finger, and light up when they reach the end.
Would you like to bring an interactive maze exhibit to your school, youth centre or organization? I'd love to hear from you. Reach out through my Contact page and let's plan a fun-filled day of art.
Watch, solve, and take one home
On my YouTube channel, Mazing By Josh, you can watch me draw each maze from the first line to the last. Here in the shop you'll find printable maze packs and single mazes to download and solve at home.
This gift has been a blessing, and I'll keep walking through the doors to wherever it leads me. My goal is simple: to give everyone a fun-filled art experience. Thanks for being here, and happy maze solving!
